Our World Is Ended: A Quick Review (Nintendo Switch)

Updated: Sep 16

It’s not often I find myself immediately put off by a game. In a visual novel, especially, you learn to expect a certain amount of crude or distasteful jokes. For me, “Our World Is Ended” went too far, too fast. I played on the Nintendo Switch, so let's get into my review.

I expected a level of quality from a game published by PQube. In “Our World Is Ended,” there is the phantom of an intriguing plot. It introduces itself as a game centered around a small indie studio in the process of developing a mixed reality headset. The headset itself is a dome, with cameras and screens. This would be an amazing tool for future video games and experiences, no?

Wouldn’t you just love to hop into the environment of your favorite game or show?

Well, it seems the much more interesting choice is to use this technology to zoom in on a character’s chest, seemingly without her knowledge, or to change the ads around the city to suggestive photos of women. I’m not sure why you’d want two out of the three characters you first introduce to have only their flaws highlighted, but again, I’m just the player here.

You see what I mean?

Giving up on testing the headset, we head back and finally get shown the small team of developers in the studio. Four more objectifying jokes in, and we see two of the gentlemen on a forum for the studio’s games. Apparently… cyberbullying those giving critique to their game?

This puts into perspective the state of the characters and their studio. Obviously, banking on the headset, they should really focus on that.

The dialogue throughout these scenes shows just how upset the writers are about their product. It’s unfortunate. They had a really good hook. Phenomenal music, incredible UI. But threw it all away in favor of misogynistic commentary poorly disguised as jokes. However, if the writer’s goal was to give me the ick, they did amazing, actually.

Now, I don’t actually mind “fan service” in games. The issue is when it’s harmful objectification that encourages the disgusting behavior people actually experience.

Asano is pointing out the harassment.

“Pervy Jokes” and characters written through the filter of objectification can be done correctly. Take Bayonetta, for example. Bayonetta (excuse my language) kicks ass. Not only does she kick ass, but the lens of objectification in which she is viewed is completely within her control. And she owns it.

To put it simply, this is the first time a game has turned me off so quickly. I originally wrote this review since I got the game for free. Seems my wallet dodged a $50 hit.

It’s a bummer I won’t experience the story I was hoping for. But hey, not every game is for me. And that’s okay.

If you’re anything like me, this game won’t be for you either.
