King of Tokyo

King of New York is a stand-alone game by creator Richard Garfield that retains the main concepts of King of Tokyo while providing new ways to play. As in KoT (King of Tokyo), the aim is to be the first monster to reach 20 victory points (VPs) or the last monster standing. On your turn, you roll six dice up to three times and do the actions on those dice. Claws do damage to enemy monsters, hearts heal your own damage, and energy is collected so you may buy power cards with unique powers that no one else has. The game board for King of New York is larger than in KoT, with each monster inhabiting a region of the metropolis and everyone vying for fame in Manhattan. When you strike, you can relocate a monster to another district, either to avoid military troops or to find fresh smashing possibilities. Yes, smashing because you can now damage structures and get points for doing so, but the more harm you inflict, the worse the military response.

The monsters from King of New York may be played in KoT and vice versa, however, the power cards are unique to this game. ______________________________________________________________ 2. Egizia Shifting Sands (Kickstarter Edition) 2–4 Players

3. Smallworld: 2–5 Players

40–80 Min Playing Time

Age: 8+

In Smallworld, players compete for conquest and dominance over a world that is simply too small to contain everyone.

On each round, you either use the many tiles of your selected race (type of creature) to take adjacent (usually) areas, maybe defeating weaker opponent races along the way, or you abandon your race and allow it to "decline". Flipping the tiles to the black-and-white side signifies a declining race.

At the conclusion of your turn, you get one point (coin) for each territory your races control. You might have one current race and one in decline on the board at the same time. Your occupation total may vary depending on your race's unique talents and the territory they occupy. Following the final round, the player who has the most coins wins.

4. Between Two Cities 1–7 Players

25 Min Playing Time

Age: 14+

It's the early 1800s, a period of massive development and urbanization. You are a world-renowned master city planner who has been tasked with redesigning two separate cities. Projects of this magnitude need the experience of more than one person, therefore for each job, you are assigned a partner with whom to discuss and carry out your great plans. Will your planning and collaboration abilities be sufficient to create the most spectacular metropolis in the world? Between Two Cities is a partnership-driven tile-drafting game in which each tile represents part of a city: factory, shop, park, landmarks, etc. You work with the player on your left to design the heart of one city, and with the player on your right to design the heart of another city. On each turn you select two tiles from your hand, reveal them, and then work with your partners separately to place one of those tiles into each of your two cities before passing the remaining hand of tiles around the table. ______________________________________________________________ 5. Super Stocks 3–4 Players

90 Min Playing Time

Age: 7+

In Super Stocks, three to four players fight to make the most money on the stock market. The game takes around 90 minutes to complete. Super Stocks is also a redeveloped version of Fund Manager from the previous year.

The gameplay has not been significantly modified from Fund Manager. Players move one pawn across a one-way board with numbered tokens ranging from one to three. Only once all players have spent all of their tokens do they become available for use again. Each turn, the active player must carry out the action where the pawn lands. These acts include purchasing and selling stocks in four firms, drawing an event card, and doing one of four additional special actions. ______________________________________________________________ 6. Escape from Sunset Island 4–10 Players

30–90 Min Playing Time

Age: 9+

"Start as the zombie or as one of 9 unique characters whose survival depends on finding and transporting food, water and gas items to either the marina or airport in order to escape the doomed island town.

Resource items slow your movement down (minus from die roll), while other items, such as weapons, medi-kit and the abandoned jeep, can come in handy. Some items are better left unfound (the zombie spawn).

Get caught and there is a chance you will become a zombie for the rest of the game, so use doors and fences for temporary refuge, weave cooperative and individual play, and keep your wits about you if you hope to save at least a strand of what's left of humanity." -Board Game Geek ______________________________________________________________ 7. Age of Gods 3–5 Players

90 Min Playing Time

Age: 12+

In this game, players are ancient gods attempting to help their chosen tribes grow and conquer the earth. The gimmick is that the gods/players do not know all of their selected tribes at the start of the game; they are revealed every other round. This game intrigued me initially, I really enjoy board games that revolve around mythology or Gods and when I saw this game, my first thought was "CLOSE ENOUGH, LETS GO!" I wish I could find a better cover photo of the game, it's actually really neat to look at since there's SO MUCH going on! ______________________________________________________________ 8. Merchants of Amsterdam 3–5 Players

60 Min Playing Time

Age: 10+

In Merchants of Amsterdam, players strive to achieve first or second place majorities in a variety of categories. These include commodities marketplaces, trade colonies, and warehouses in Amsterdam.

The game's distinctive element is that it has a spring-driven auction clock that performs Dutch auctions throughout the game. You start the clock, and it counts down as all of the participants have their hands ready nearby. The concept is that as time passes, the cost of the card decreases, and it is merely a matter of who will pay for it first by slapping down on the clock, thereby halting it at a specific price. ______________________________________________________________ 9. Savanna Cafe 2–4 Players

20 Min Playing Time

Age: 7+

Savanna Cafe is a rapid card-based game with stunning visuals. Each player handles three animals: a lion, a gazelle, and a hippopotamus. The aim is to maneuver one animal until it hits the bar at the top of the board.

To do this, players must make intelligent use of their action cards. The lion can devour a gazelle, the hippopotamus can make the lion back off, and the gazelle can jump far, but not very frequently.

During the game, a player has the option of stealing another player's cards or spending his own. ______________________________________________________________ 10. Tempus 3–5 Players

60–120 Min Playing Time

Age: 14+

"Conquer new lands, increase population, build cities in this abstract civ-like game." In turn, a player may:

- Move people

- Have babies (increase the number of people tokens on the game board)

- Fight (initiate the diceless combat system against another player)

- Have an idea (draw chance cards)

- Build a city (replace people tokens with a city tile) I think this game is pretty interesting, I love simulator/city-building games so I've always wondered if I'd enjoy this game's mechanics. Just haven't been able to get it to the table yet haha! ______________________________________________________________ 11. Scurvy Dogs 2–8 Players

50 Min Playing Time

Age: 12+

"It’s the golden age of piracy, where cutthroats and scurvy dogs sail the seas and raid villages in search of plunder. But before they run afoul with the local government, they must rush to pay the Governor and the King a hefty tax to go from pirate to privateer." -Board Game Geek Scurvy Dogs: Pirates and Privateers is a competitive game for 2–8 players. Would-be pirates begin with a ship and knowledge of a nearby shipwreck. They can pillage the remains of dead ships for a small amount of currency and supplies, preparing their crew for a run at pirate respectability.

As their renown and treasure pile expand, they may participate in Booty Challenges to earn money, crew, supplies, and better ships. They can attack Spanish strongholds or kill the Kraken. They must also avoid the Spanish Armada, British officials, and other pirates. The primary aim is to be the pirate with the most gold and a head still attached to a neck. I love pirate-themed games! Pirate-themed games give us the fun parts of humanity's flaws we can't engage in during our real lives; pillaging, living on a ship long-term, and for some of us- acquiring massive amounts of booty! Argh! __________________________________________________
